Plitvice Lakes are not only famous for their waterfalls and untouched nature, but also for their exceptionally rich wildlife. Discover which animals inhabit the Plitvice area, where you can see bears and deer, and how to explore the landscapes of Lika on horseback. Experience Plitvice Lakes from a completely new perspective.

Besides being home to breathtaking flora, stunning landscapes, and protected plant species, Plitvice Lakes are also a safe haven for many animals that are now rarely found elsewhere in Europe.
Some of them remain hidden deep within the wilderness, away from human eyes, while others you may have the chance to encounter during your next trip to Plitvice Lakes.
Where can you observe bears, and how can you explore Plitvice on horseback? Read on and discover the incredible wildlife of Plitvice Lakes.

Dense forests, untouched nature, crystal-clear lakes, and rushing streams create the perfect oasis for countless animal species. The Plitvice Lakes area covers nearly 300 square kilometres, with more than 80% of the landscape blanketed by magnificent forests that provide a safe habitat for hundreds of animal species.
With minimal human intervention, no industry, and no pollution, Plitvice plays a crucial role in preserving Croatia’s biodiversity. Many species that have nearly disappeared from other parts of Europe still maintain stable populations here.
Croatia’s oldest national park is home to three large predators: the wolf, the bear, and the lynx. This is particularly significant because the presence of these animals, especially the lynx, is extremely rare across Europe.

At the same time, encountering these animals while walking through the park or forests is highly unlikely, as they avoid humans just as much as people avoid them. If they notice you, they will most likely retreat quickly into the wilderness. Still, the thought alone is exciting: walking along the same trails as the mighty Lika bear or knowing that a magnificent Eurasian lynx may be hiding somewhere nearby.
In addition to large predators, Plitvice Lakes are home to many other species, both large and small, including otters, roe deer, red deer, wild boars, various bird species, fish, and insects. The richness of Plitvice’s fauna is truly remarkable and still not fully explored.
While you are unlikely to encounter a bear or wolf during your walk through the park, smaller animals such as rabbits, ducks, and owls may easily cross your path.

Not far from Plitvice Lakes lies the Kuterevo Bear Sanctuary, founded to care for orphaned bear cubs that could not survive in the wild.
Here, visitors can learn a great deal about the lives of brown bears, their habits, and the importance of wildlife conservation. The sanctuary operates with the help of volunteers, and much of its work is dedicated to education and animal protection.
What makes this place truly special is the fact that the bears are not treated as a traditional tourist attraction, but as animals being given a second chance at life.
The sanctuary is open year-round, and the best visiting hours are between 9 AM and 8 PM.
