Hidden in the heart of the Lika region, Plitvice Lakes National Park is one of Europe’s most spectacular natural wonders. Since 1979, the park has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, continuously captivating visitors with its harmonious interplay of water, forests, and karst formations.

Plitvice Lakes are famous for 16 interconnected lakes, whose crystal-clear waters cascade over a series of travertine barriers, creating breathtaking waterfalls and cascades. The tallest among them, Veliki Slap (the Great Waterfall), stands at an impressive 78 meters. The park’s pathways are carefully integrated into the landscape, allowing visitors to experience this natural wonder up close. Shaped over thousands of years, its unique scenery represents a perfect symphony of water, karst, and forest.

Trails leading into untouched nature

Plitvice Lakes consist of 16 interconnected lakes, divided into twelve upper and four lower lakes. They are linked by numerous waterfalls and cascades, constantly reshaped by travertine formation, a natural phenomenon that creates limestone barriers.

Beyond the famous Veliki Slap (The Great Waterfall) mentioned earlier, the park features waterfalls such as Galovački Buk and Milanovački Slap, along with countless smaller cascades that reveal the beauty of nature at every step.

The park offers more than 22 kilometers of well-maintained trails and wooden boardwalks, seamlessly blending into the natural surroundings. Visitors can choose from eight marked routes: from short, two-hour walks to full-day adventures covering nearly every corner of the park.

A boat ride across Lake Kozjak and the panoramic train provide opportunities to rest during your visit, all while enjoying stunning views of the greenery and forested hills. Be sure to stop at the Upper Lakes viewpoint, which offers a breathtaking panorama of waterfalls and turquoise-blue waters cascading over travertine barriers.

Plitvice Lakes are, in essence, an open-air biological laboratory. The park is home to more than 1,400 plant species, including numerous endemics and rare varieties. Beech, fir, and spruce forests cover over 80% of the park, while spring and summer meadows burst into a spectacular display of wildflowers. Wildlife is equally abundant – brown bears, wolves, otters, wild cats, deer, badgers, and more than 160 bird species inhabit the area.
